It's a useful skill, and the memorization training has to be very useful, but the kids with a realistic shot at winning put way more time into it than it seems worth. First prize is a check and very cool resume/talking piece, but the kid who comes in a hair behind has little to justify the time and stress. Science fairs, on the other hand, seem more useful even if you never win a prize.
