This. Look at attrition, productivity, leave time (particularly sick leave)
and do 360 evaluations.

Also, look at how the workforce interacts with each other, with production equipment, and with management.

Finally, look into company policy and SOPs. If they are oppressive and treat employees like five year olds then there is a good chance morale will reflect accordingly.
