I've heard a better solution
First extra time period - 10 v 10
Second extra time period - 9 v 9
Third extra time period - 8 v 8
Etc.
Normal red card effects still in play, though - if a team is a man down at the end of regulation, they stay a man down in the extra periods unless the other team loses someone to a red.
