After you score a goal in the run of play you get an extra penalty kick. Maybe 3 points for a goal, one point for the penalty kick. Then you have less chances of a tie at the end of a game.
Either that, or the other end of the spectrum is that people start thinking "extra points in football? That's not football. You can't leave the game up to some kicker that doesn't even get hit." ... kind of how people argue that point for soccer penalty kicks, but ignore that point for football extra points.
