I have heard a former CSAF say
even though they are all-in with the F-35, they may have to re-open the F-22 production lines because the F-35 would under-perform against other 5th Generation warplanes.

The real problem is that that F-35 can be beaten by current 5th Gen warplanes that our adversaries use or are developing. The F-22 was still way ahead of those warplanes.

The F-22's high end cost was a misnomer. In many ways the F-35 is actually more expensive. We have just ordered many more airplanes so the cost goes down per plane. The F-22 was $330M, but at 183 planes. If the cost was spread out over the original order sum, 785 planes, it would have been $135M per plane, roughly the same amount as the F-35 is anyway. Also, the F-22 was in development since 1978, so it had sunk costs associated with that from which new technologies have been created and used in the F-35 and other drone platforms. The F-22 is a better airplane, but it was a political casualty.
