MLB has changed a lot since I played
Back then, MLBs were big guys who were blowing up running plays. These days, MLBs are guys that are expected to run like the wind and have the hip turn to hang with a quick TE. I guess a mission could help, but I think on the whole, it is a huge challenge physically and mentally. Guys come off their mission and have some perspective. They start thinking - I have a 1% chance of playing in the NFL, but a 100% chance that I need to max my undergrad GPA to get into the right grad school, so... yeah, instead of putting in a second workout Saturday afternoon, I'll start prepping for the LSAT / MCAT. I don't think anyone outside of BYU really understands those challenges. Yeah, a few P12 schools have some RMs, but not over half the team. It's not just the individual player, it's the team chemistry as well.....
