Here's a tip to diagnose your air conditioning troubles...
I've read with interest the recent threads dealing with AC problems, because mine stopped working over the weekend. Based on what I read and observed, it seemed to me my capacitor was out as well. We contacted a neighbor who does AC repairs, and he said that's what it sounded like to him as well, but asked me to go to the outside unit. The AC was on, but the fan wasn't spinning, and I could hear a hum. Anyway, he said to take a hanger or something and give the fan a little push. If the push got it going full speed and you felt air in the house as normal, that's another indicator it's the capacitor. We did that yesterday afternoon when the house was nearing 90, and the AC ran great the rest of the afternoon/evening.

I've got a replacement capacitor on order now, but at least we know how to keep the house comfortable in the mean time.
