With HBO, Showtime, and a sports package, I was paying $160 a month the last year of my contract. I gave them the I'm cancelling my service call. Their response was, "sorry to see you go but because you are not a new customer there are no deals we can offer you. We'll send a box with a UPS shipping label for you to return the receiver."
So I called Direct TV and signed up under their new customer deal. As soon Dish got my equipment back they hounded me for several months, offering me all sorts of deals. The damage was already done. I had already signed up with, and had installed, Direct TV.
