Some anonymous source from the Big East said that a BYU lawyer (rumored to be Worthen) was a "piece of work" because of his opposition to NBC/Comcast broadcast rights after the MTN debacle. That seems to be the source of where many of the "BYU is difficult to deal with" rumors are coming from.

With regards to the Big 12, nobody really knows. Holmoe said they made no demands, Neinas said that BYU was fine to work with. Chip Brown said that BYU walked away because they thought OU was going to bolt the conference. McMurphy from CBS Sports said that BYU got bypassed because they didn't have a western traveling partner. TCU said they bypassed BYU because their AD took Deloss Dodds out for drinks. Nobody really knows what happened here, but I don't really see anything concrete that says BYU was a prima donna or difficult to work with.
