His status as an illegal immigrant is irrelevant
As are the other crimes he may have committed. If you had a contract to pay him $500 you must pay it unless he didn't perform the services contracted. The burden of proof would be on you to show that the work was so shoddy as to relieve you of your obligation to pay him for his services, so if you go that route you'd better be able to back it up.
