Most ISPs provide McAfee as a free download. I would use that.

It isn't the best choice, but you can't beat the price. Go to the website for your ISP (i.e. Comcast or AT&T), log in as the main username and see if they offer an antivirus or security suite for free.

Avast is #1 for free AV. MS Security Essentials ratings have gone down lately.
