Your post makes a lot of sense. Obviously we don't know all of the contractual
fine print between ESPN, Fox and the Big12 but your overall premise is sound. Especially considering ESPN's cost savings through adding BYU vs. another school. Adding a school other than BYU adds another mouth to feed. BYU under their contract plus two new schools added to the Big12. By adding BYU and just one school reduces the overall payout, while keeping BYU in the inventory - good thoughts.
