Yeah, a lot of this seemed like poor planning on everybody's part.
All of these people could have seen there problems coming. Fortunately it seems the article didn't take a 'poor little me' tangent, but highlighted well some huge downsides to the lifestyle.

I applaud their efforts to live in a more sustainable home. No mortgage, repairs can be cheaper, no huge electric/heating bills, it comes with significant challenges, but this could be a movement that helps solve overcrowding and expensive energy rates as populations increase.
