i love BYU and everything it's done for me. i'll always root for them but as a college football fan, i'm not sure i can take much more of this.

our disobedient, wayward little brother landed a huge windfall and is enjoying riches of P5 membership (stadium expansion, etc). we are left to wander in CFB purgatory all because of our religion. we should be in P12. we apparently could've been in B12 once. if we miss out again, i'm pretty sure the program will never recover. the P5 will quickly zoom past us and separate themselves from everyone else. we will become North Dakota State in 10 years...a group of hard-working, white LDS kids that every so often out-works someone to a great victory.

but i like college football too much to continue being a "fan" of a school who cannot or will not put their money where their AD's mouth is. i get that it's a church owned school, which is fine...if you think modern CFB is the great and spacious building, call it like it is, wrap up shop and put us all out of our misery. i could seriously root for a UU team where 75% of BYU players went to. it would become the "not-mormon-mormon" school. i'd probably go back to rooting for ASU, who is just finishing their own stadium reno and has a shot at the rose bowl and NY6 every season.

i'm tired of getting fed excuses as to why we can't do it. i'm even more tired of being fed lines that "it's ok b/c we're BYU and we should aspire to something else besides football greatness" um...no, we'll let the other 29,950 students aspire to that...i want a football team, coach and players that want to win above all else. i want a sponsoring institution that will financially back their program because they truly believe in their ability to carry their message to the world and not insultingly pay them lip service and give them a McD's budget while everyone else is dealing with 5-star restaurants. if there's that much contention about the worth of BYU's athletics then just get rid of it already...at least the football program.

we'll become the princeton of the west...a really smart, white school with great bball and that's about it. then BYU-Provo will become about as boring as BYU-I, they will lose interest of many LDS across the country, they will lose the ability to attract many students and, maybe most importantly to maintain ties with alumni.

but yeah...if we can't put a special season together, get into a P5 in the next year or two...i think it's time to check out and move someone else into my #1 fan spot, cuz honestly, being a BYU fan has, generally, sucked. there are a few rare exceptions (2009 OU, 2006 Utah, 2009 Utah, 2013/14 texas, etc) but those happen like once in 2 years and given the current landscape of CFB and BYU's projected place in that landscape it will become increasingly more rare. i will always root for BYU but i am now more a fan of "college football" in general. i felt the change start last year...it will likely continue this year...and when we suffer through a 7-6 season this year and get passed up on for Big12 again...the conversion will be complete.

i hope i'm wrong. i really do. no pressure taysom! but i like college football too much to continue to root for a school whose most important decision makers, appear not to.
