I'm sorry, but threatening to switch allegiance to another team is utterly
ridiculous. There are only a handful of happy, satisfied fanbases right now: Ohio State's and those of a few other programs who have traditionally sucked but have had OK seasons the last couple of years. Even lots of Alabama fans are ticked off because (heaven forbid) they haven't won a national title since the 2012 season.

You can't just take years and years of developing fandom for one certain team (a team that you have very close connections to, either by geography, family, or where you went to school) and then cut it off and just announce that actually Team B is now your favorite team.

Lots of us are frustrated. It's been a tough past few years. But don't think for a second that BYU fans have it really bad compared to most other fanbases. Yeah, our last three years have been rough. But our "rough" years are 8-5 years. Sure, we get a lot of wins over mediocre teams, but that means we're better than mediocre at least. I'm not saying that I'm satisfied with being a little better than mediocre by any means. I'm just saying that the grass isn't greener on the other side. If you want to jump ship and cheer for some other school you have ties to, but are by no means a die hard fan of, you're bound for the same disappointment if you are able to (after many years) become a die hard of that new tea. If you're in Utah, do you really want to jump ship and become a Ute fan because they're in the P12? Well, they've had losing records in 2 of the last 3 years and have the odds eternally stacked against them competing against USC, UCLA, and the Arizona schools. The Utes could easily have another losing record this year.

I guess you can try and arbitrarily chose a program you have no real ties to, but who are traditionally good. But even then, you're bound for disappointment. Oklahoma is a perennial top 15 team, but half their fans want to can Bob Stoops. Oregon has played for two national titles and just had a Heisman Trophy winner, but Ducks fans are ticked about not winning a National Title and are not sure it will ever happen in the post-Chip, post-Mariota era. Want to be an Ohio State fan? Great. It will be fun for a couple of years until Urban Meyer finally keels over and dies. Want to be an Alabama fan? Fantastic. You'll probably win a National Title in the next couple of years. And then Nick Saban will retire and 'Bama will "struggle" by only being a top 20 team and fans will be ticked.

And even if you do chose a winner, how much satisfaction can there be in being a bandwagon fan? "Your" Crimson Tide won the National Championship! Congrats! Have you ever actually been to Alabama?

Most fan bases are frustrated. It's OK to be frustrated. It's OK to criticize the coaches and call for change (even though 99% of us here -- including myself -- don't really know what the yewt we're talking about). If it's too much for you, though and you want to give up on sports, fine. But don't expect the grass to be greener somewhere else.

The horrible thing about being a die hard fan (which most of us here are) is that when things are bad, it's hard. The lows are low. But if things get better, there will be no greater satisfaction.

Maybe it will never happen. Maybe BYU will never have a great season again. Maybe we'll get locked out of P5 and be relegated to FCS-like status in the G5. Maybe we'll discontinue the football program. Who knows? All I know is that if the ship starts sinking, I'm not going to swim to the safety of the USS Ohio State. I'm going to play the Cougar Fight Song on my 1987 DG-20 Casio electric guitar, set to mandolin until my head is completely submerged. At that point, I'll swim off to College Football Is Dead to Me Island where I'll watch the Utah Jazz and Chicago Cubs suck it up for years to come.
