Wife and I decided that it wouldn't give the kids the full experience. They would end up being the bad guy when it came to management. Collecting rent, meeting repairmen, telling roommates they couldn't do that, policing "sleepovers", worrying about the BYU housing police getting called, etc.
Also, and as important, the kids will often migrate from complex to complex depending on their whim during their BYU career. Buying a place in a great ward now could be a sucky ward next year. Buying in non-married could be a problem when your kid gets married, etc. 3 of my 4 kids moved around, changed roommates, got married or otherwise liked the ability to not be tied to a place the old man thought was a good investment.
my .02 if you're buying for your kids to use.
