Independence isn't perfect but recent Big Ten Announcement
Further confirms it was the best decision especially as the college football landscape continues to change. Who would have thought a couple of years ago that a new playoff system would result in conferences significantly limiting nonconference opponents and that our lack of a conference affiliation (in the absence of a P5 invite) would be they key to us being able to schedule future P5 opponents. Think about being Boise State for a minute. They won't be able to get the scheduling treatment we are because they are part of a nonP5 conference and will be treated like every other nonP5 team. I think we'd all like to be part of a P5 conference as would every school who isn't in one today. It doesn't seem fair that we aren't today but that is the result so far of our geography, lack of an historical tie to a P5 conference, or uncompromisable religious focus. At the end of the day, we are playing a lot of big games against big time programs. Sure we'd like to play them at home but at least we get to play them now and for the foreseeable future given the strength of our program, scheduling flexibility, relationship with espn and nonaffiliation with a conference.
