It is a read option offense
The plays up the middle are to set up and soften the edges. You might sacrifice a little yardage early for bigger yardage later.

The runs up the middle are the basis for the whole offense. Once the defense is biting to the middle the you option the outside ends. Once they cheat outside it opens the middle back up. Hine had a nice 20+yard TD up gut last year late in a game for this very reason.
