I have been to RES a few times as a non Ute fan and I ALWAYS wear gear.
Weber State: Sat with my bros in the Weber section. Got a couple rude comments about being a high school team. No big deal at all.

UCLA: Went with alum buddy and wore gear. Fans were very nice in our Utah section.

USU: Wore Aggie blue and cheered my guts out. (I had been drinking with my Aggie buddies before the game). Utah section. No problems at all.

Pitt: Sat in the West stands. Fans were nice. I had a Utah fan tell me he was sorry he had to cheer against Pitt, but if they were playing BYU he would be right there with me, drinking and cheering. Gee, thanks.

BYU 2000 RES: LaVell's last game. No problems during the game but after a student shoved me right in the chest and said #$@! BYU. I verbally replied in kind but was smart enough not to punch him right in his ugly face.

BYU 2006 RES: Beck to Harline. Sat in the luxury boxes. No problems.

BYU 2008 RES: Went with my kids and walked along Guardsman. Big mistake. Bombarded with "#$@! BYU" and stupid anti-Mormon crap. But nobody touched us or threatened us, so whatever.

BYU 2010 RES: 2nd worst year ever. We stupidly got dropped off right where the tailgaters let out. I mean RIGHT there on the corner of 500 S. by the tailgating lot. Dozens literally surrounded us like a mob and went absolutely nuts, screaming and yelling. And stupid crap about garments and Joe Smith. (I don't even believe in Mormonism). We had a couple little kids and they were scared to death. We couldn't move and were just overwhelmed by the sheer numbers in our face. And i mean right in our face. Completely encircled. There were a lot of trashy people who looked like the unblurred faces from an episode of COPS. I seriously thought we were going to get our butts kicked. But just as we were being engulfed by the powers of hell... all of a sudden a milfy Mormon Ute lady barged through the crowd and screamed "there are children in there!!" "There are children in there!" And it immediately diffused the situation. Just like a switch went off.

BYU 2012 RES: Worst year ever. Walking from Guardsman down 500 S. among the Utes some younger drunker fans just started jabbering about Mormon crap. My buddy who isn't a Mormon said "your coach is a Mormon!" Next thing I know two guys descend on him. One knocks his Y hat off the other tackles him into the hillside. My buddy is on his back punching up and getting the better of it, the rest of us are pulling off scavenger Utes who were all trying to go cheapshot WorldStar our guy -- who is still on his back. It was chaos and we were way outnumbered. I got hit by someone but never did throw a punch. My blue sweatshirt got torn but as fast as it started it ended. One or two normal mormon-looking Ute fans broke it up. Bad part is we still had to walk into the stadium with this crowd. Non stop insults, shoulder to shoulder. But at this point we were no choir boys because we were so pissed at being attacked. So we dished it right back. In a way most BYU fans would not approve. I swear if knifes were available someone would have been killed. That is how much hatred i felt.

So overall its a mixed bag. In my experience going as a non-BYU fan is fine. Going as a BYU fan is 50-50. The line for me isn't taunts and anti-Mormon crap. I don't whine about that. I don't care if you want to yell about Joe Smith's 400 wives or whatever. Just don't touch me. If you lay your hands on someone merely because they are an opposing fan, you have serious problems.

I have been to games at all level of sports all over this country. 30+ professional games not counting anything related to the Jazz. Most times I have worn visitor gear. And in only one place in this great country has it ever gone to blows. Utah. So when i hear about it being an equal problem. That it goes both ways. That BYU fans are just as bad. I call BS. I'm not saying its all Utes. Its a percentage. And it has nothing to do with sports. Its 100% religion.

Hating BYU is an outlet for the hate people feel for Mormons. The point that mormon BYU fans don't understand, however, is that hate has to come from somewhere. Its not jut born out of naked bigotry. Its years of feeling mistreated by the Mormon establishment in this State. So the lesson is this: for things to ever improve, it will take both sides making some changes.
