With the exception of Polynesians, the LDS gene pool doesn't produce
high end football athletes in troves. As a people we love sports, though, so it's not surprising we produce our share of marginal athletes who are great players. Those who really don't have much of a shot at excelling beyond college level.

I think we all wish 1978 had come much sooner, but the top Polynesian talent is where we really dropped the ball in LaVell's last decade here. Wish BYU were more attractive to the top LDS Polynesian recruits year in & year out -- but reality is, we haven't been winning too many of those recruiting battles the last couple decades. The Yewts outworked us & stole our momentum & monopoly in the 90s, & at the same time the nation at large was wising up to the talent level there--& the need to get on it quick, before BYU & the Yewts could work their magic.
