Money drives expansion, but it sure would be nice
if the stars aligned for a top 10 finish this season (and NY6 bowl win). Obviously long term, winning and being highly ranked leads to more interest, eyeballs, and money, but I'm talking immediate one-season impact in the expansion context.

With the wheels apparently turning in the Big 12 (Boren comments and existence of expansion committee at least), and assuming nothing happens until after the coming season, a top 10 finish (barring unusual ranked-team distribution amongst the conferences, that should be the approximate cut-off for NY6 inclusion this year) would just go that much further in keeping BYU as the first name on people's minds, and should at least have some bearing on expansion committee discussions (can't ignore the successful seasons of Utah and TCU immediately prior to expansion). At the very least it would make any expansion that didn't include BYU that much harder for the Big 12 to justify to the college football world generally. The Big 12 will do what's best for the Big 12 (or at least Texas and Oklahoma), but I'm sure trying to not look incompetent carries some weight to them. Right now I feel like they could credibly go in any directly with expansion. BYU needs to make it hard for them to credibly expand somewhere else. BYU is always talked about as having "tradition," but at the very least you have to reinforce solid, consistent success with very impressive seasons every few years or that tradition lacks luster.

In any case, even if it didn't aid in the expansion scenarios in any way, as a fan it sure would be nice.
