I think a human beard influenced the form more than a bit.
Pretty sure it's a form that's taken from other feline cartoons. IOWs, it's a humanized form established by the cartooning industry. As is the humanized mouth. Neither is all too unique, but artistically, the old retro-cat is pretty good. It works as a solid example of its kind.
