It isn't just Whittingham, although he could set a good example.
It is up to all the ALUFs as a group. The Anti-Mormon crowd at the U is a minority (I'd guess less than 15% are really antis), but they feel very emboldened--the U is their place to voice it loud. The ALUF crowd at RES is probably 50% of the fans, but they are intimidated. It is weird up there. An idiot hater like suspenders boy will hold up a sign mocking garments and not one LDS person will even politely ask him not to do that. Plenty of them will grumble about it--I know several Utah fans that complain to me about the language and insults they hear up there, but on game day they sit on their hands...and I get it. They are there to see their team, not to police idiots and get confrontational. It is just the dynamic up there.

If Whittingham or another LDS person that is highly regarded would just speak up and set a mild example, the antis would feel pressure to leave their hate out of it while the LDS fans would take a little courage.

Nobody is asking Whitt to quote scriptures at pressers or to make a big campaign out of it. Just set the tone. It doesn't have to be a big deal, but it could go a long way.
