Is it too much to ask for a New Years 6 Bowl for this team?

This is my attempt at a blue-goggled post. The one thing BYU has not done over the pat 10 years is take the next step along the path of progress fans are yearning for. That step is a New Years 6 bowl. If there was ever a better opportunity than this year I am not sure when it was or will be. I am not going to dwell on the negatives, only the positives as to why it could happen.

  1. First and foremost Taysom Hill. I don't know that we have seen or will ever see a QB as dynamic as he is at BYU. Sure there have been better passers, but his ability to take it to the house on any given play make him unique. If there ever was a time to ride a special player to a special season.....this is it.
  2. The schedule. I know it is the most difficult BYU has faced in its history, but I think it is difficult in name only. Nebraska, Michigan, UCLA and Boise State all have new coaches or QB's or a mix of both. They are all beatable. The X facto rfor me is that three of these four games are on the road. BYU needs to split with a win over Boise (next point) at worst and go 3-1 at best to position themselves for January 1st.
  3. Boise State. A loss to Boise State might be a factor later in the year if BYU somehow manages to go 10-2, which I think is the minimum it will take to be considered for a NY 6 bowl. While I would love to win a couple of those first three road games I think this is the game that potentially swings the season for BYU. If they win at Nebrasa, followed by a win over Boise State all of the sudden they are getting national pub and later in the year if they continue to play well if it comes down to them and Boise State they will have upper hand with a win.
  4. The team needs to progress through the season.....I mean get better with each and every week. Even during losses. I am not sure if that is asking too much as I haven't seen it happen very often, but if they weather the early schedule and then run through the rest of the schedule looking like a dominant team then the eyes of the bowls may be opened.
  5. BYU is due. If the coaches can stay out of the way (sorry, a little negative) and the team can stay healthy (especially Taysom) and there can be some contribution from players we may not have expected....then maybe, just maybe things finally fall in BYU's favor.

I know this is a lot to ask, but it is time to stop talking and wishing and hoping and go out and earn it. I think it is possible if things fall the right way. I want to be booking hotels and making other travel arrangements for a bowl on January 1st. To me that is what this season needs to be about as should every season until BYU breaks through. If you want to be in the conversation with TCU, Utah and Boise State.....go do it!
