Batman's offensive preview
OL: much has been made of byu's "improved" OL. Under 2J's tutelage, an aggressive mindset has been re-initiated. Run blocking has been the strength the past few years (byu averaged 4.2 ypc in 2014, including 4.8 for both Williams and Algie). Pass blocking has been inconsistent the past several years, needs improvement, and against this years schedule will go a long ways in determining the win/loss record. Anae and TJ have said there are 7 or 8 trusted lineman. The cold reality is byu is thin on the OL, the true number is more like 6 with game experience (Lapuaho, Johnson, Koroma, Kanuch, R Matthews, and Wilcox). If any of the 6 experienced go down, it could spell trouble. Kanuch has been out part of fall camp and is a key cog in the run blocking so if he can stay healthy and contribute that will be Big. The other two being counted in the 8 and being asked to step up and become rotational players are Dawe and Hoyt (walkon and freshman).

WR: byu is deep and has the talent to potentially be really good. Fall camp has seen a lot of WRs make plays, but for the games the rotation is likely to be shortened. Matthews, Kurtz, and Juergens are likely to start and see the most reps. Look for Houk, Pearson, Blackman, and Pututai to be the first off the bench, depending on the formation. You might see Trey Dye sneak in some reps. YAC will improve with this group. I wouldn't expect to see much of the traditional TEs.

RB: Algie Brown is posed for a breakout year, having averaged more than 5 yards a touch even last year. As has been noted, look for him to contribute more to the passing game out of the backfield where last year he averaged and bone crushing 9.4 ypc. It's likely that Hine and Carter will be next in line and see plenty of reps, with Francis Bernard (RM, surprise of fall camp) being the fb or in on some two back sets. You might see Juergens sneak some running and pass plays in out of the backfield.

QB: Taysom is clearly the leader and Star of the offense. His continued development as a passer and offensive line protection will be key. BYU will look to have Taysom throw the ball down the field more and to improve upon his 144 qb efficiency rating from last year, including yards per attempt. Look for Anae to dial down on the qb designed runs, especially any up the middle, although I would expect to see some Zone Read and outside qb runs still in the package (with less frequency than last year). Taysom will continue to tuck it and run, while being more smart with when he challenges tacklers. We've got to keep Taysom on the field to optimize wins. For my opinion, I wouldn't want any other qb leading my team.

This offense reminds me some of 2001 and 2006. Senior QBs with lots of starting experience coming back, who under-performed in the prior year. What this year may be lacking in comparison to those great offenses, is that the 2015 OL isn't quite as experienced as those teams. Remember that even though Tejon, Kanuch, and Lapuaho look the part this is still only their 2nd year starting, while 2001 and 2006 had multi-year starters/seniors on the OL. Time will tell if Taysom and company can match those heights.
