There are always sunk costs
like toys but those needn't be every year expenditures. The break out another thousand thing makes it seem like that's what you do every year or two. This is of course not the case if you maintain your boat. Other than routine maintenance I've spent a total of about $400 on parts and maintenance in the four years that I've owned my current boat. I'm sure I'll have other repairs eventually but it's not the money pit that boats are made out to be. This is true for every boat my family or I have owned going back to when I was a kid. My dad taught us how to meticulously maintain and it has worked out very well.
