week 2 - vs BSU
Week 2 - #24 BYU (1-0) vs #17 BSU (1-0) – Sat Sept 12, 2015 – 7:15pm EST – ESPN2

BYU shot up in the rankings after beating Nebraska at home. BYU gets the ESPN night cap but there is significant interest in this game. After a surprising win vs Nebraska and BSU’s revenge win against their ex-HC and UW, both teams are ranked and looking poised to put on a show.

The last time the Broncos were in Provo they got beat badly, and they responded by blowing out BYU in 2014. This budding “rivalry” hasn’t really had an “epic” game yet…that all changes tonight. BSU lost some key talent (QB, RB) last year but returns almost everyone else and has a ton of returning young talent and a great HC. Bronco’s D gets caught asleep early on a classic BSU trick play (backward pass to backup WR in flat who launches it downfield to wide open player for 69 yard TD). After 54 seconds BYU is down 7-0.

A costly fumble by Brown, who is still trying to fill in for JSwag, gives BSU great field position. A horribly timed PI call in the endzone on Davis’ on 3rd and long, gives BSU ball on 2 and they make it 14-0 three minutes into the game!

Taysom responds by calming driving down on a 14 play, 80 yard, 4 minute drive. He goes 8/9 on the drive and rushes 3 times for 14 yards, including the go ahead scamper from 4 yards out on a goal line play designed to hit TE Sampson in flat. It is very apparent that Taysom is, again, the consummate leader of this entire team and BYU will go as far as he can carry them.

The teams exchange scores the entire game, highlighted by Nick Kurtz corralling a 71 yard bomb by Taysom…he simply out jumped the BSU all-star DB Donte Deayon (who earlier picked off taysom), ripped it out of the air and then out-ran everyone. The game is won when Takitaki (fresh off suspension) comes up with a huge sack and forces a fumble. Later, on the ensuing drive, Hine breaks loose for 18 yards on a key 1st down play and allows Taysom to take a few shots at the end zone before the game is over. They all fall short…35-35….OT!

BYU wins the toss and defers. BSU scores a TD on the first possession and BYU gets their shot. Taysom finds Mathews on a broken play for a 17 yard TD pass to tie it up. Bronco, in true Bronco fashion, wants to prove everyone wrong and elects to go for 2 (again!) to win the game. He runs almost the same exact play, except this time, Taysom just barrels into the end zone and BYU wins 43-42. “Ultimate revenge” for 2012 debacle in Boise, Taysom says afterward. “Credit to superstar Nick Howell for that gutsy call…With a QB like Taysom, if we can’t get 2 yards to win the game…we don’t deserve to win…I’ll take our chances on that play and yardage every time,” says an elated, avenged Bronco in the post-game interview. When a reporter follows up to ask why Nick Howell was calling offensive plays Bronco proclaims, “He was the most vocal that we should go for it…he believes in these kids and is my bestest friend in the whole wide world!”

Player of the Game – Taysom Hill – 40/62, 421 yards, 3 TD’s, 1 INT, 13 rushes, 69 yards 1 TD
