I tried this recipe while camping last week. It didn't turn out well. First, I let it cook for probably 50 minutes, and I was constantly adding new coals out of fear of the coals going cold too quickly (I was using coals from the fire, not charcoal briquettes). It just never "set". When I finally took it off of the coals, there was an uneven layer of brownie-like cake on the bottom that was covered by a buttery soup on the top. The flavor was okay, but it was not that appealing and wasn't very easy to eat.
What did I do wrong?
Oh yeah, and to top it off, I disregarded the step to line the dutch oven with foil feeling confident in my seasoning. Getting that caramel off required a lot of scrubbing that ended up taking off a lot of the patina. I had to re-season when I got home.
