this is pure speculation but I think a huge part of withdrawing was knowing he wasn't going to be able to be be back fully until the latter part of the year which would have cheated him out of showcasing himself to the extent he wanted to as well as getting records that he has wanted to achieve.

Similar to Kurtz whocould have played some last year but enough of the season was missed that he decided to just wait and get back for a whole year. Mangum is going to be grateful for that.
