When 'personal issues' have drifted into the workplace my company has usually offered free professional counseling to them when they're written up the second time. Few of them use it. Those who don't almost always end up getting fired or quitting withing three months.

When we've tried to help and they've refused I don't feel bad about firing them. Layoffs, on the other hand, suck.
