BYU's Path to a Football National Championship: Prep School
Been thinking about how we really have to have some structural changes to give us an advantage if we are ever to win a national championship. One systematic practice by the military academies has been the prep school concept. It is a year of what basically amounts to a freshmen year of college, without losing eligibility, but being able to practice. Previously, we had something like this happening with Ricks. Losing Ricks has clearly hurt us.

Just like the service academies, BYU has a unique environment that has many more requirements. Non-LDS people at BYU could use a year to settle in, or wash out. As a prep school, they could still have a football team. Having a prep school would also allow international students (such as Ziggy) some space to adjust. It may also help returned missionaries who go out before enrolling a chance to get in an adjustment year.

If we are going to be nationally competitive, we have to do something different. With Lavell it was a passing offense and recruiting Polynesians. I don't think a prep school would do it all, but it could be part of a larger solution.
