At one point in the UConn game when BYU opted to attempt a field goal, a bunch
of knuckleheads near me started up with the whining and calling for the coaching staff to be declared unclean and exiled. I turned to my son who was with me and said, "You know what Nick Saban would have done here? Kick a field goal. You know what Andy Reid would have done here? Kick a field goal. Do you know what every coach that isn't an idiot would have done here?" At which point my son said, "Kick a field goal."

He was right.

It gives me a chuckle, in a sad and sometimes exasperated way, that, in general, the coaching decisions that get criticized the most are exactly the decisions that every decent coach at the high school, college, and professional level would have made. There are mistakes, of course. Just like every decent coach at the high school, college, and professional level.

Apparently there are people who think that the members of the BYU coaching staff are incompetent, bumbling idiots who just give random, baseless instructions to the team, and that Tom Holmoe, university administration, and the Board of Trustees are blind and apathetic, and content to just sit back and watch the coaches make idiotic decisions for a decade or so.

You know, since the Church and BYU are known for wasting lots of money and being completely inefficient, just throwing millions of dollars wherever without any oversight or accountability or thought or prayer involved... (That idea is so absurd that I had a hard time even writing it TIC.)

Grass is greener, etc., etc.
