The problem is that pre-season polls are given any credence.
The first several weeks of polls use the pre-season as a base from which teams move up or down.

Fortunately, the CFP committee waits until the season is half over to release its first ranking. The AP and Coaches polls make for interesting discussion but are irrelevant.

When the first CFP ranking is released, on November 3, we'll have a clearer picture of who are the best teams.
