They lost to them last season and made the playoff and were in the NC discussion. If they had won it all, they'd still be the best team in the country, even with a loss.
Even if you lose to a team, doesn't mean that team is better than you. There are 1000s of factors that go into a game, and yes, you got outplayed, but I think the whole resume builds the rank of 'better' team.
