Does #2 really not have a optical drive?
for what he needs it for, 1 and 2 are a toss-up but mostly because of the RAM.
Friends don't let friends get 4 GB of RAM.
I'd probably lean to the first one because I dont' have a great opinion of Windows 8 and for word processing, you wont' see a difference between the two processors and the prices are a wash.
