Will he have a companion with him or be released in the field?
Normally the mission presidents will not allow an Elder to not have a Priesthood holder as a "companion" until he's released.
First, call the mission president and make sure your plan will work. Fewer and fewer MPs even want family to come to pick up missionaries.
