You don't need 4wd to do those things. Most people don't ever really need it.
A lot of people like to think they do though. If you just do normal camping and you hit the slopes a few times a year 4wheel drive is not essential.
It will be your call but if you only occasionally need 4wd you are giving up a lot of comfort and ease of use for something you may need a couple times a year.
