See it all the time. Often with those two city pairs.
I came home from Detroit a few months ago to Vegas....non-stop to Vegas from Detroit was $350 on SW. I bought a one-stop to PHX with a layover in Vegas for $160.
Got off the plane in Vegas. No big deal.
There is a website that helps you find those fares. Skiplagged. The airlines have been trying to shut it down. They don't like it when you do that but there is nothing illegal or unethical about it.
