There will always be an outlier banging on the door...and 2014 proved the value
of those two programs when they were left out. Oregon, TCU and Baylor were all banging on the door....none of them are 'Bama, Ohio State or Florida State. Oregon did have the benefit of an extra game in the Pac12 Title game and the Heisman winner.
Baylor has yet to play a team this year with a beating heart (Texas Tech is the closest)....
