A couple things - if you want to get into hunting, a dog will be a pretty
solid motivation to get you out. I find myself going some days when I wouldn't otherwise get out simply because of the dog. I've always had GSPs and my dad and brother have always had Brittanys. My opinion on those two breeds is that from a strictly hunting perspective they are pretty even. Both have the potential to be very good in the field. With young kids, I'd probably go Brittany simply because it's a smaller dog. My GSPs have been too big for my younger kids to deal with for the most part.

Also, and keep in mind, I only have my dogs to hunt - and really for no other reason, I don't ever have them on a leash. I worry that having them on a leash too often will negatively affect how they behave in the field. I don't ever want my dogs to think they need to stay close to me. For you, it sounds like if you do decide to hunt, that will be secondary, so probably not that big of a deal. Little kids, between GSP and Brittany without hunting being top priority, I probably go Brittany.
