My thoughts on Kirby
First, I have every confidence he'd do fine at BYU. Past and current teams are full of players that weren't sure but were glad they went and felt BYU helped them to become what they wanted to be.

Second, there is little doubt in my mind that this is at least partly from negative recruiting. Based on what a number of recruits have said, I am convinced that they not only tell recruits that the honor code is stricter than it is, but also that they won't be able to survive academically at BYU. WK's quote sounds like he's been told that if he steps an inch or two outside the line, he'll be guilty of letting his teammates down. The truth, IMO, is that players that are honest and forthright about their issues rarely miss more than a single game and most, none at all. Players that are trying but have occasional slips do just fine at BYU. Also, it's important to realize that every single program in college football (including Utah) talks about holding players accountable for their actions and will suspend you if you step over the line. It's just a matter of where that line is drawn. I wish a guy like Russell Tialavea, KVN or Spencer Hadley would/could give him a call. I'm pretty sure they'd tell him that they were glad they went to BYU. In a candid moment, I'm pretty sure that KW would tell him the same thing.

Third, I think he's probably a great kid that really just wants to play high level football. He can do that at BYU, a school that currently has a top 10 SOS (and will become even more challenging next year). And, if he wants to play and play early, BYU is a great choice because he's more likely to get playing time at a school that needs him than at one that stockpiles DTs like 2 by 4s at a lumber yard. He'll play at BYU and, IMO, BYU can get him ready for the NFL. But, as Coach Holliday has pointed out, at some point in time the time to play ball stops and you have to get on with life without it. BYU is a school/program that cares about how things are going to be for you off the field. If he really wants to be selfish, then he should consider a school that will make sure he's ready for life, not one that only wants to exploit him for his ability to play football.
