This game has given me major mixed feelings. On the plus side, Rose is giving
some players minutes who won't see the the court much in conference games. The team was rolling until he put the backups in for a five minute stretch in the first half. While I think Aytes and Austin can be productive with the second unit, it depends on someone getting them the ball. Toolson is a disaster. Bad defense, terrible decision making, and not athletic enough to be productive other than as a spot shooter. I don't think you can have Emery and KC off the floor at the same time against decent teams.

My biggest concern is that our team has no idea how to run a half court offense. Even when they throw it into the post, everyone spots up and waits for the ball to come back outside rather than moving and giving the post player options. KC is lost right now trying to figure out how he fits in. Several times he crashed the boards when our bigs had great position only to knock it off them or have it go back to the other team. He needs to figure out that we don't need that this year, unlike last year when he was our best rebounder under the hoop. He won't set the triple double record this year, and he needs to be okay with that. Likewise, he seems really uncertain as to when to be aggressive, and when to let other players create. He is still great going to the basket, but with two quality bigs posting up down there, it is less open than it was last year when everyone was closing out on four shooters.

I wish I had the answers. I don't think that we miss Haws' scoring as much as we do the certainty that he was the offense, and everything went through him. I just don't think this team has figured out whether they really want to be a half-court team to take advantage of some really good players, but at the expense of taking away KC's effectiveness, or be a running team to maximize the skills of KC, Emery and some interchangeable forwards at the expense of making some pretty good big guys irrelevant on offense. Lots of great tools to work with, but I am not sure what we are trying to build yet.
