Just Finished Watching Tonight's Game. Some Thoughts...
1. Emery is going to be very good. He has all the upside that Carlino had without the poor decision-making and occasional crazy plays. He can assist, defend, and score.
2. Emery and Collinsworth have to figure out how to play together effectively. Collinsworth has got to be fully engaged the entire game. I'm confident they'll play better and better together as the season wears on.
3. I can't believe how many times tonight BYU had their hands on the ball--a rebound, a near-steal, etc.--but MVSU came up with the ball. Grab the stinking ball!
4. There is no excuse for the poor FT shooting by most of the team. That will cost the Cougars a handful of games this year unless it improves.
5. In all the years Rose has been coaching at BYU I've never seen him so frustrated. I believe it stems from the fact that this team has so much talent and potential, but it's taking a while to put everything together and they're not making progress as quickly as he'd like them to.
6. If Fischer can't consistently hit shots he needs to spend more time on the bench. He is a real head-scratcher to me. For someone who is such a prolific scorer from distance I've never seen someone who can hit 2 or 3 in a row and then force up consecutive bricks or even air balls. Most great shooters never miss by as much as he misses some shots. If he doesn't improve Seljass may get some of his minutes.
7. Kaufusi is doing well, and will continue to get better and better. He got beaten a couple of times on drives tonight, but he'll learn and improve that.
8. Aytes may end up being a very good player for BYU, but has yet to show it. Hopefully, he's still getting in game shape and getting his timing down after being hurt for so long.
9. I've been impressed with Chatman this season, but he seemed to take a step back tonight.
10. Davis is impressive and will really help BYU this year, but please, please, please learn to hit a FT.
11. Austin brings a lot of energy, but he's got to be able to hit those point-blank shots.
12. I was surprised that Calvert didn't get any PT tonight. As sloppy as things were on the court at times, he may have been one that could have helped to calm things down a bit.
13. This team has a lot of talent, but they're not yet anywhere close to a well-oiled machine. It wouldn't surprise me if they lost to both Belmont and Utah. I wouldn't be overly surprised either if they won both of those games, but right now I see the Cougars as underdogs in those games.
14. I've heard people say that Haws is a better all-around player than Emery. If that's true, next year could be really fun with Emery, Haws, Mika, Kaufusi, Davis, Aytes, Chatman, and others.
