The key issue with this team: for first time in 5 yrs, no high usage rate player
The term "usage rate" is one that you see mentioned often by fantasy basketball stats geeks, which basically is an estimate of the number of possessions a player gets per 40 minutes. One formula to calculate it is as follows:

Usage Rate = {[FGA + (FT Att. x 0.44) + (Ast x 0.33) + TO] x 40 x League Pace} divided by (Minutes x Team Pace)

For at least the last 5 seasons, Dave Rose has had an incredibly effective high usage rate scorer taking a high percentage of the teams shots (Jimmer and Haws). I guess the one possible exception would be 2011-12, but that year there was Davies, Hartsock, and even frosh Carlino, all proven scorers.

So the coach Rose offense has become one that funnels the ball to its best offensive scorer, giving him a high volume of looks per game. The advantage of this is that is provides a level of consistency and order to the offense, particularly if that player is adept at getting to the foul line and shoots a high FT%, which Haws and Jimmer both did well.

This year, we really have no high usage rate scorer coming into the season, so we have two options:

1) Find a new guy to be that high usage rate, "go-to" scorer (I think Emery is the only real candidate this yr, but is still young and may not be quite ready for the volume)

2) For the first time in 5 or so years, play a more balanced offensive attack with multiple guys contributing. Will be interesting to see if Rose can find enough guys that are comfortable scoring by committee to compensate for not having a premier scorer on this team. So far, the offense has looked awful but the talent seems to be there.
