First off, he was recruited by Duryea. Stew pretty much took a hands off approach to recruiting and Duryea has been there forever. He was the one that primarily recruited Collette. Collette has known Duryea the entire time he's been at USU. If he didn't support the new hire than he could have quit the team when the hire was made (and not accepted 2 more semesters worth of free tuition). Also, he was saying a lot of really great things about Duryea in the weeks leading up to him quitting. Maybe he was lying but if so then he was only setting himself up to look like an idiot.
