All but one of Lavell's Top Ten finishes happened prior to 1985.
And much of that was thanks to a steady diet of UTEPs and New Mexicos and Wyomings year-in and year-out. When you can pencil yourself in as WAC Champions every season it helps your record considerably.
Lavell's record against "big boy" teams was no better than Bronco's. We just play more of those teams now than we did back then.

He has a losing record vs p5 teams and feasts on sub .500 teams. Once he is above .500 vs p5 then talk about extension
