USU wasn't using their timeouts to end the first half, but were still running plays, short passes and inside runs. Not trying to get to the sideline or stop the clock at all. They had no intention of trying to score, so what was the point of running plays? Either take a knee and send it to halftime, or work the clock. Most of the time in that situation you'll just get a few yards, and go to halftime. Very very infrequently there will be a defensive breakdown and you'll happen to get a TD or into field goal range. But there's a much better chance of fumbling or throwing an interception. It's just too risky. I'm glad it came back to bite them, but all they had to do was take a knee to go into halftime up 4.
