It is both
The WCC teams rely more on outside shooting and lets be honest, you see a lot more white players in this league. They are not the 3* and 4* players coming out of high school. They are good basketball players but not the great athletes. Some of them become better in college than was projected (that is to be expected) and a few of them actually get shots in the NBA. These are all private, faith based, institutions.

As a result of what I said above you see coaches in this league adopting more of a team oriented game. It has been and adjustment for BYU. Outside of Gonzaga BYU is the team that for its own recruiting pool can get the 4* and occasional 5* player. It allows them to play a more fast paced offense but it also hurts them when teams can get up on them and control the pace of play.

In looking at the St. Marys game I opened my comments that defense wins almost every night because it is easier to replicate. Offense can come and go with players have off nights shooting. It can be the arena, the lighting or just a bad day. But if you can play defense those factors are not as impacting. For BYU to dominate the WCC they will have to learn to play lock down defense. That will eventually force teams to play at their pace.

You see a lot better half court sets in the WCC. That has been a weakness of Rose teams. I am not saying that we have a dominant inside game right now but we struggle to make the entry pass and our bigs seem oblivious to kicking the ball back out for either resetting with better position and getting the ball back or creating an open look by the shooters on the arc.
