Cal's a great school but I'm leery of the direction it's heading.
They're approaching a state where a majority of their students are non-residents. These students are paying the full cost of admission, so I understand why the university wants them. The problem is that the rest of the universities in CA's system are trying to ape Cal. Even SDSU, who is part of the lower tier, is trying to become more selective. Seems like CA's higher ed system is becoming a finishing school for international elites. NTTAWWT but let Stanford & the Claremont Colleges fill that niche. Otherwise you end up with problems like California's maternity tourism.

And I don't think it's quite right to say BYU emulates the California model. BYU is still a mostly LDS institution. They would only be analogous to Cal if they were choking off LDS kids for non-LDS kids who pay unsubsidized tuition.
