Dave Rose inadvertently caused all of the problems we are seeing with this team

I am not one of those fans calling for Dave Rose's head after an extremely disappointing season so far but blame falls solely on decisions he has made over his tenure, starting predominately with the Jimmer era.

Green light for everyone

No shot Jimmer ever took was a bad shot.  Rose's attitude to Jimmer's questionable shot selection was almost encouragement, with good reason (Jimmer earned his green light).  Since then, we have had the Carlinos, Fischers, and Emerys of the world flocking to BYU wanting that same green light from day one without earning it.  Even the Halford's of the world feel they should have it.  Players are also not held accountable for bad decisions (taken out of the game after a series of poor shots).  I would be interested to see the difference in 3Pt % of the team between contested/off balance 3's and open threes with time to set your feet.  I feel the difference would be drastic.

Emphasis on Personal Statistics

It was interesting watching the Warriors game this last week where Curry went off for 25 points in the first quarter shooting 7/8 from the field.  I wondered why he sat so much of the 2nd quarter and why he wasn't shooting nearly every time he touched the ball from there on out, since he legitamely had a shot of beating at least Kobe's 81 points if the Warriors had made it an emphasis.  I was expecting Steve Kerr to coach how Dave Rose would.  How many times have we seen Rose keep a player in the game longer than he should have to beat a record?  Jimmer was kept in blowouts to break 50 points, Haws was kept in when we was scoring 40+, and Collinsworth has been kept in many times with the sole hope of getting another rebound or assist to get a triple double.  This is a nice gesture for the coach to show that the player's accomplishments are special but it sends the team the wrong message that those individual stats mean something or are important.  This has never been on display more than this year with Collinsworth's Triple Doubles.  So many times in so many different games I have seen Collinsworth staring up at the scoreboard checking his stats, trying to be the rebounder under the hoop for foul shots when we have much taller players that should be there, passing up easier shots at times for assists he needs to get to 10, etc.  He is not a leader on this team because the team knows he is more worried about the individual accolades and national attention that has come with the triple double record.  Even in his interviews he has not shied away from talking about being the best rebounding point guard in the country, having the triple double record, etc.  He is a solid player that does a lot for us but is in no way a #1 option, which is what is missing from this team.

Ambivalence on Defense

Has Dave Rose ever made a substitution for a player not showing effort on defense if that player is being semi productive on the offensive end? i.e. Kyle Davis.  Jimmer was basically asked to conserve energy on the defensive end in order to help the team as much as possible on the offensive side, which worked for that team, but again, those philosophies will not work on almost every other team!  Jimmer's team was once in a generation and those same things that worked then are ruining our future teams.  Kaufusi is by no means an offensive all star but he almost single handedly kept us in the St. Mary's game with his defense.  We played so much better in that game when Davis was on the bench yet against Pacific, Davis was back up to playing his normal large amount of minutes and hurting us on countless possessions with turnovers, missed free throws, and the black hole that is throwing to him on the block. I cringe when I hear CB defend a player by saying "but he scored 20+ and our backups scored next to nothing"  We have a team full of stat stuffers and not players that actually help you win the game.  Kevin Love, Carmely Anthony, Hassan Whiteside, Dwight Howard are all players that are coveted by many teams and seen as All Stars but have failed time and time again to be players that actually help you win.  Kyle Davis's Double doubles may look sexy but his play hurts us in so many other areas.

I do not think Rose is a bad coach but he needs to realize (and he is starting to) that every team has its own unique challenges and ways that they need to be coached.  The success of the Jimmer era, as incredible as it was, has begun to cause problems with our recent teams which needs to be remedied if we want to do anything with the great recruiting classes we have coming in in the next few years.
